Math in our Kindergarten classroom
This year we are introducing a new math program that provides the teacher with easy to access ways to help children visualize math. The teacher will use manipulatives as tools to move children from the concrete to the abstract so that the children can achieve understanding.
Some things to practice at home:
counting to 10 backwards and forwards
recognizing and writing numbers 1-20
counting verbally 1-100
shapes
colors
positions (top,middle,bottom)
sorting ( by color,shape,size)
patterns- extending and copying
measurement- (longer -shorter- taller-shorter)
graphing data
Math can be an everyday activity!! Count as you walk with your child. Have them count their toys, crayons, shoes etc. Discuss the colors outside or inside of your home. Have fun and watch them grow!!
